Mychal Thompson: NBA Star and Bahamian Roots
Mychal Thompson was born in the Bahamas and later moved to the United States to pursue his basketball career. He was drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers with the 23rd overall pick in the 1978 NBA draft. Mychal played for the Blazers for six seasons before being traded to the Lakers in 1986. He spent the remainder of his NBA career with the Lakers, winning two NBA championships in 1987 and 1988.
Julie Thompson: Volleyball Star and Educator
Julie Thompson, Klay's mother, was a volleyball player in college for the University of Portland and the University of San Diego. She was a member of the University of Portland's 1978 national championship team. After her collegiate career, Julie worked as a volleyball coach at the high school and collegiate levels. She currently works as an educator in the Santa Clara Unified School District.
