Early Life and Education

Joachim Gauck was born on January 24, 1940, in Rostock, Germany. His parents were devout Protestants who instilled in him a strong sense of faith and social justice. Despite growing up in communist East Germany, Gauck pursued a degree in theology from the University of Rostock. He later worked as a pastor in a Lutheran church in East Berlin.

Political Career in East Germany

Gauck became involved in the East German civil rights movement in the 1980s. He co-founded the New Forum, a political opposition group that played a key role in the peaceful reunification of Germany in 1990.
